Industrial Engineering is human effort engineering and system efficiency engineering. Industrial engineers are not functional engineers and functional managers. Systems are first designed by functional engineers and managers. Industrial engineers are specialized engineers and managers who evaluate the systems from efficiency point of view and optimize the systems. In this optimization, efficiency improvement or waste reduction effort, many techniques are employed by industrial engineers. Mathematical, Statistical and OR analyses are also employed by industrial engineers in the efficiency improvement effort. No doubt there are specialists in all these areas and industrial engineers use the services of experts as consultants where required. In some companies, where full time specialists in mathematics, statistics and OR can be employed, they are employed and they are made part of IE department.
